A new migrant caravan is making its way to the United States

More than 300 migrants left the capital of El Salvador.

Navarrete said Mexico was in communication with Central American governments about the disturbances and "rejects the displays of violence that occurred today at the border with Guatemala".

Thousands of migrants who are part of a caravan of Central Americans trying to reach the US border took a break Sunday on their long journey toward the USA border. Dozens more were injured, and several people received medical treatment for exposure to tear gas fired by police.

The Honduran migrants broke down the metal gates at the Guatemalan and Mexican border stations at the Suchiate River after authorities in both countries closed them. Many in the caravan have been on the road for more than two weeks, since the group first formed in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. The troops will be drawn from about 10 U.S. Army installations and consist largely of military police and engineers, one of the U.S. officials said.

"If I send them to the store, I'm going to worry if they don't come back soon", she said.

Her claims could not be verified, but migrants' representatives in the talks asked the Mexican government to provide a list of those who had been forced to return.

Mexican officials have greeted the caravan with a mixture of hospitality and hostility.

Mexico's Interior Ministry said that temporary identity numbers have been issued to 111 migrants under the "You are home" program.

More than 1,700 members of the caravan reportedly accepted offers from Mexican authorities, including the country's president Enrique Peña Nieto, to stay in Mexico and apply for asylum there.

Several mayors have rolled out the welcome mat for migrants who reached their towns - arranging for food and camp sites.

A Mexican official said Sunday that the group is seeking entry via Ciudad Hidalgo, Mexico.

"There are people fainting, there are wounded", said Rojas, who spoke to The Associated Press after dropping off a group of women and children in Tapantapec, where the caravan planned to spend the night in the town square. Rojas transported the group to their destination after spotting them on a highway trudging through temperatures approaching 40°C (104°F). Many have said they are coming to the U.S.to seek a better life, which would not qualify them for asylum under US laws.

As it left San Salvador, the group was accompanied by police who would "guarantee safety" all the way to the Guatemala border, one officer told AFP.

The president has painted the group as an imminent threat to the US border, and suggested without evidence that Democrats may be funding the caravan.

The group has received some assistance from Mexican federal agencies, the AP reported, but has pledged it will push forward in its journey toward the southern US border.

As Sunday dawned, several in the crowd took to a microphone to chide their colleagues for the attack and urge better behavior.

The group must travel about 75 miles (120 kilometers) to reach the border with Guatemala and another 185 miles (300 kilometers) to reach Mexico's southernmost border.
