Apple unveils new MacBook Air with Retina Display and Touch ID

All-new MacBook Air takes flight

'The first MacBook Air revolutionised Mac with its thin wedge-shaped aluminium design. In Canada, the MacBook Air starts at $1,499.

Portability, certainly, hasn't been compromised upon. It is priced at $1,199 (roughly Rs. 88,200), and goes up for pre-orders in the USA today, with availability from November 7.

The first thing you'll notice is that the Air has gotten even smaller again, but still has a 13.3-inch display.

The MacBook 12-inch gave us extreme weight loss, though, but struggled to gain traction nonetheless. "It would be Apple's entry level laptop so it could keep some "legacy" ports". The aluminum bezels around the old Air display have been replaced by the black glass common in other modern MacBooks, and the size of those bezels has been reduced by half.

The screen is 13.3-inches of @2x Retina display. Its 2560 x 1600 resolution looks just as crisp, color-rich, and generally pleasant as you'd expect.

At the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Apple today revealed a new MacBook Air.

What might be giving you pause still is the keyboard. There is also a brand new Force Touch trackpad, giving it 20 percent larger area apart from pressure-sensing capabilities.

The new MacBook Air has a backlit keyboard with individual lighting behind each key, based on the third-generation Butterfly mechanism that's said to be 4 times more stable. But Apple still wants to cater to people who want a mobile Mac but aren't about to pay $1199. It also includes thinner sides around the screen, shrinking the device's overall footprint.

As far as the audio performance is concerned, it is 25% better on all all fronts. The lowest-end MacBook Air features a 1.6Ghz dual-core 8th-generation Intel Core i5 CPU with Turbo Boost up to 3.6Ghz, 8GB of LPDDR3 RAM, 128GB of SSD Storage and an integrated Intel UHD Graphics 617 card. Apple's 12 hours of wireless web browsing (or 13 hours of iTunes movie playback) is on a par with before, too, though it still insists on only including a 30W power adapter.

Much of the world's tech still uses USB-A, and some Air fans will complain about the new Air's USB-C ports. No USB Type-A, though Apple does at least let you keep the 3.5mm headphone jack. These allow MacBook Air to offer the most secure boot process and most secure storage of any notebook.

What is the MacBook Air?

It's worth reflecting that the MacBook Air redefined the "thin and light" laptop into a machine for the mainstream, leading a movement away from CD/DVD slots and mechanical hard drives and sparking a competing wave of Windows "ultrabooks" which have now become the norm.

In addition, the new MacBook Air enclosure is made from a custom, Apple-designed aluminium alloy that enables the use of 100 per cent recycled aluminium for the first time, which has the same strength, durability and attractive finish as the aluminium in all Apple products.3 Using this custom aluminium alloy helps reduce MacBook Air's carbon footprint by almost 50 per cent, making it the greenest Mac ever.
