The Post also reported that bin Salman, in conversations with the White House, has described Khashoggi as "a unsafe Islamist", claiming he was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood. Riyadh initially denied involvement in the murder.

While insisting the United States did not condone Khashoggi's killing, the top USA diplomat said the United States had "deep and long-term strategic relationships" with Saudi Arabia and "we intend to make sure that those relationships remain intact".

The outcry in the US demonizing Saudi Arabia over the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Kingdom's consulate in Istanbul threatens US-Saudi strategic ties, the former Saudi intelligence chief warned on Wednesday.

The kingdom has faced intensifying global pressure to be transparent about the death of Khashoggi, a columnist for The Washington Post who was a critic of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The Israeli PM had asked top USA officials recently not to abandon their support for bin Salman over the killing of Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Turkey's Istanbul, according to multiple reports.

A stream of reports in Turkey's pro-government media -- often sourcing anonymous Turkish officials -- have laid out a number of theories about the murder and its aftermath.

Instead, it said, the Saudis on Wednesday invited the Turkish prosecutor and his delegation to Saudi Arabia jointly to question the suspects held there about what happened to Khashoggi's body and whether his death was premeditated.

Saudi Arabia has denied the reports in the Washington Post and New York Times.

Khashoggi's family rejected the characterization in a statement to the newspaper.

Exactly one month after the disappearance and the subsequent murder of the Washington Post columnist inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, the U.S. has yet to issue the "severe punishment" that Donald Trump had promised if the regime's involvement in the journalist's death were confirmed.

One Israeli official said, "Saudi Arabia is a very important state in the region, and Israel and other nations have a major interest in ensuring its continued stability".

"The victim's body was dismembered and destroyed following his death by suffocation", the statement said.

He entered the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul a month ago to obtain documents for his upcoming marriage, but never left.

United States activists have launched a petition, calling for a section of road near the Saudi embassy in Washington to be renamed Jamal Khashoggi Way.

A source close to the Saudi Royal Palace told CNN last week that the location of Khashoggi's body was not known to the Saudis.
