US mid-term elections: Democrats retake House, Republicans retain Senate, say networks

Donald Trump

So the stakes for today's election are very high indeed, and current polling indicates that the most likely scenario is that Democrats will take back control of the House of Representatives and that Republicans will retain control of the Senate.

"In 2010 ... it was more about did you agree or disagree with Obamacare?" he recalled.

He bet big on a xenophobic closing message, warning of an immigrant "invasion" that promised to spread violent crime and drugs across the nation.

Early exit polls showed Trump was a major factor for almost two-thirds of voters who cast their ballots, while a CBS News poll found that 55 percent said they disapproved of the president's performance.

Rep. Tim Ryan of OH, who challenged Pelosi unsuccessfully in 2016, has left the door open to the possibility of challenging the Democratic leader again, while others are mulling a bid only if Pelosi steps aside or if she were to be defeated in a run for speaker.

House Democrats could be banking on launching an investigation using the results of U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller's already 18-month-old probe of allegations of Russian interference on Trump's behalf in the 2016 presidential election. No longer: Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn, a close Trump ally, has beat Phil Bredesen, the popular former governor running as a moderate.

Former vice president Joe Biden, often touted as a possible Democratic candidate to take on Trump in 2020, said he'd be "dumbfounded" not to win the House.

A loss of the House will also trigger significant second guessing of the President's tactics, given that he chose not to make the booming economy his primary midterm argument, instead turning to a searing indictment of Democrats focusing on immigration and laden with racial language.

Voters go to a polling place to cast their ballot during the midterm elections on November 6, 2018 in Phoenix, Arizona.

In Virginia, political newcomer Jennifer Wexton defeated two-term GOP Rep. Barbara Comstock. Democrats are widely predicted to win the House of Representatives, giving the Trump team its first experience of an opposition Congress.

But Republicans are favored to retain their slight majority in the U.S. Senate, now at two seats, which would let them retain the power to approve U.S. Supreme Court and other judicial nominations on straight party-line votes. The President framed the election as a choice between what he has described as Republican law and order and a Democratic "mob" and spoke extensively about immigration and securing the border in the final days of the fall campaign season.

All 435 seats in the House, 35 seats in the 100-member Senate and 36 of the 50 state governorships were up for grabs. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Sherrod Brown of Ohio, Sen.

More than half of Florida voters, 51%, approve of the job Trump is doing as President, compared to 48% who do not. Was the New Yorker just inspired by an old soviet cartoon on United States elections?

For Democrats to have any chance, they need to win at least one of the races in Arizona, Texas or Tennessee, which have not traditionally been favorable to them in recent decades and then virtually run the table in other toss up states.

Early results began to trickle in from states such as in, site of a vital US Senate race, and Kentucky, home of a pivotal US House of Representatives race, but it could be hours before the winners are determined.

"Many factors favor Democrats".

The demographic divides were coloring the political landscape in different ways.

Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib of MI, who are both Democrats, will be the first Muslim women to serve in Congress.

Democrats boasted record diversity on ballots.

Numerous most competitive races for the House of Representatives will be fought in the suburbs, where anecdotally we have been hearing that white married women could be moving away from the GOP.
