All the Ways Democrats Made History on Tuesday

Alexandria Ocasio Cortez votes in her district in the Bronx

The Boston City Council member first broke barriers in 2009, when she became the first woman of color elected to that body.

Democrat Ayanna Pressley gives her victory speech at an election night party after being elected to represent Massachusetts' 7th congressional district, Tuesday in Boston.

The first Muslim women have been elected to Congress, with Democrat Rashida Tlaib winning in MI and Ilhan Omar winning in Minnesota.

Some of the big wins for Democrats on Tuesday were experienced leaders, like Michigan's Gov. -elect Gretchen Whitmer, who led the Democrats in the state Senate, or Kansas's Gov. -elect Laura Kelly, who has served in the Kansas state Senate since 2005.

Ayanna Pressley became the first black woman to represent MA in Congress and will occupy the seat held by such lions as JFK and Tip O'Neill.

Democrat Ilhan Omar will serve as the nation's first Somali-American Congresswoman.

Ocasio-Cortez, 29, has promised to try and push the Democratic Party further to the left, by supporting Medicare for all, free college tuition and the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

They'll join a record 25 Democratic women who are heading to Congress for the first time after Tuesday night, helping Democrats take the House of Representatives even as the party lost key Senate and governors' races. Missouri's Claire McCaskill and North Dakota's Heidi Heitkamp were both vulnerable as Democrats in deep red states, and a lot of people are pointing to their votes against Brett Kavanaugh as what cost them their elections. She's also a lesbian and was among a number of of LGBTQ candidates.

(8) Cathy McMorris Rodgers, the highest ranking Republican woman in Congress, comfortably won re-election last night.

The Democrats may not have gotten quite the blue wave they were hoping for ー but for women in politics, Election Day was an indisputable success.

"With our rights under assault, with our freedoms under siege, it's not just good enough to see the Democrats back in power, but it matters who those Democrats are", she said. In 1982, 58 per cent of women voted for Democrats and 41 per cent voted for Republicans.

The gains among women on Capitol Hill come as potential Democratic candidates for president are already taking steps to challenge Trump, several prominent female Democrats among them.

From Florida to New Mexico, these candidates brought platforms that stood for a range of issues such as affordable health care, gun safety and climate change.

Ayanna Pressley has made history as Massachusetts's first black congresswoman. Houlahan was one of four female military veterans and political newcomers to win seats for Democrats; the others were Mikie Sherrill in New Jersey, and Elaine Luria and Abigail Spanberger in Virginia.
