IPhone XR sales reportedly kill production boost plan

Similarly, with iPhones no longer launching on a set schedule these days (with last year's iPhone X launching in November and the iPhone XR launching in late October of this year), a random 12 week snapshot of iPhone sales is not almost as instructive as it was years ago. Even more alarming, the report claimed that overall production might drop by as much as 25%.

"The utilization for the XR production is not reaching its maximum capacity now", sources told the publication.

However, it looks like the iPhone XR isn't selling as well as Apple might have hoped, according to a new report from Nikkei Asian Review.

A smaller third assembler, Wistron, originally tapped to be on standby for rush demands, will also reportedly not receive rush orders this season.

For starters, the claim that iPhone XR demand is exceedingly below expectations runs somewhat counter to a previous report from reputed analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who just recently raised his iPhone XR sales estimate for the December quarter.

This, combined with the rapid rise of China-based handset makers like Huawei, may also help explain why Apple will no longer provide iPhone unit sales figures: The firm is no longer the number two player in the smartphone market and may fall to number four or five in the coming year by unit sales. Apple is widely considered to be Foxconn's biggest customer, but other stocks of its suppliers were hit worse.

Apple shares fell almost 4 per cent on Monday after the report from the Nikkei financial daily, which fuelled concerns that the iPhone XR - the cheapest of three iPhones unveiled in September - was facing weak demand just days after it hit shelves.

"The main questions are why do this now and is Cupertino hiding something (e.g., decelerating iPhone unit sales)?"

In September, Apple launched three new iPhones, the premium iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max that start at Rs 99,900 and go all the way up to Rs 144,900.

Specifically, Rosenblatt Securities Managing Director and top research analyst Jun Zhang foresees an iPhone X production ramp-up of between 1 and 2 million units for the holidays.

Apple did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment.
