Voting begins in crucial midterm polls in US

Youth turnout could hold the key in the US mid terms and threaten Trump's hold on Congress

The day of reckoning for USA politics approaches as Americans prepare to go to the polls.

But Trump will gain a convenient scapegoat to blame for everything from stock market turmoil, crime, rising interest rates and illegal immigration: the Democratic-controlled House. The party controls both chambers of the state legislature and the governor's office in 25 states, with Democrats holding that trifecta in eight states, the group said.

Elections for all the members of the House are held every two years.

"I don't think there's a Democrat in this country that doesn't have a little angst left over from 2016 deep down", said Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILY's List, which spent more than ever before - almost $60 million in all - to support Democratic women this campaign season.

The House has 435 members with states represented on the basis of population.

He adds that, "whether we consider it or not, the press is very much considering it a referendum on me and us as a movement".

He also contended, as he does daily, that if the Democrats win they will work to roll back everything he's tried to accomplish.

Overall, 6 in 10 voters said the country was headed in the wrong direction, but roughly that same number described the national economy as excellent or good.

Trump was in IN to back Republican Senate candidate Rep. Mike Braun, who is challenging Democratic incumbent Sen. Perhaps more important, they would win subpoena power to investigate Trump's many personal and professional missteps. The midterm elections are Tuesday.

In his first reaction to a mixed night, Trump chose to celebrate Republican successes even though the loss of the House meant his record of busting political convention could not defy the traditional first-term midterm curse faced by many of his predecessors.

"We have the beginning of a new Democratic Party, younger, browner, cooler, more women, more veterans, can win in MI, can win in Pennsylvania, can win in OH", said Van Jones, a CNN political commentator.

The political realignment, defined by race, gender and education, could re-shape USA politics for a generation.

Just five years ago, the Republican National Committee reported that the GOP's very survival depended upon attracting more minorities and women.

But with turnout a key unknown factor and pollsters still unsure about the effect of Mr Trump's maverick style on voters, both parties admit that they may be in for nasty surprises. But in the first midterm under Trump―an utterly unconventional president―there are many unknowns, above all the bottom-line impact of a president who has driven both supporters and foes to a rare fever pitch of emotion.

One of the RNC report's authors, Ari Fleischer, acknowledged that Republican leaders never envisioned expanding their ranks with white, working-class men.

A nationwide poll released on Sunday by NBC News and The Wall Street Journal details the depth of the demographic shifts.

Data-driven analytics website FiveThirtyEight has the chances of Democrats taking the Senate at 18.9 percent as of writing.

Among white college-educated women, Democrats enjoy a 28-point advantage: 61 per cent to 33 per cent.

Katie Hill (D) vs Steve Knight (R) for California 25th: Knight is the incumbent republican being challenged by 30-year-old Katie Hill who, despite swearing off Super PAC donations, has raised more money than Knight. The House was also getting its first two Muslim women, MA elected its first black congresswoman, and Tennessee got its first female senator.

Former President Barack Obama said while campaigning for Democrats: "The character of our country's on the ballot".

"One election won't eliminate racism, sexism or homophobia", Obama said during an appearance in Florida. "But it'll be a start".

After a campaign in which Mr Trump was accused of race-baiting with repeated and unsubstantiated references to an "invasion" of undocumented immigrants bent on rape and murder, left-right divisions in America could not be deeper. He dispatched more than 5,000 troops to the region, suggesting soldiers would use lethal force against migrants who throw rocks, before later reversing himself.

The charged atmosphere is expected to drive record turnout in some places, but on the eve of the election, it is far from certain which side will show up in the greatest numbers.

Likely Senate outcome: Republicans hold on to the Senate.

Democrats are most optimistic about the House, a sprawling battlefield extending from Alaska to Florida.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., boldly predicted that Democrats will win back the House.

Three states could elect their first African-American governors, while several others are running LGBT candidates and Muslims. Democrats will need to keep all their seats while gaining two from the Republicans to gain control.

In the Senate, on the other hand, Republicans have a very favorable landscape and are competing in conservative states held by Democrats.

House Democrats may not be able to push their bills into law, but they are certain to use their new majority - and the powers that go with it - to pursue a variety of investigations into Trump Cabinet members accused of misusing taxpayer funds; to subpoena Trump's tax returns and probe his business ties; to reopen the House inquiry into his campaign's link to Russian Federation during the 2016 campaign; and quite possibly pass articles of impeachment against the president, depending upon how big the Democratic majority is.

While Trump is prepared to claim victory if his party retains Senate control, at least one prominent ally fears that losing even one chamber of Congress could be disastrous.

In the op-ed, Morgan said that he wasn't all that impressed with Democrats' hoped-for "blue wave" that would ideally have taken over the various branches of government had the midterm elections gone the way they intended.

Of 26 Democrats in toss-up races, 11 have said they would oppose Pelosi as speaker, while an additional 19 Democrats who are in districts that lean Democratic or are solidly in their party's favor said they would oppose her, according to a CNN tally.
