How Buying a Makeup Sponge Today Will Help California Wildfire Victims

Paradise California has practically been wiped from the map after being overcome by flames

At least 44 deaths have been reported so far from the late-season wildfires and with hundreds of people unaccounted for the toll is likely to rise, as thousands of tired firefighters waged a pitched battle against the deadliest infernos in California's history.

About 7,700 homes were destroyed when flames hit Paradise, a former gold-mining camp popular with retirees, on November 8.

Ernest Foss, 63, was a musician who had moved to the town of Paradise from San Francisco eight years ago.

Three portable morgue teams have been requested from the United States military along with a "disaster mortuary" crew and three groups of forensic anthropologists.

Another two deaths occurred in a separate blaze near Malibu, the Woolsey Fire, bringing the casualty count to 44 statewide.

What is the latest on the Camp Fire?

The "Camp Fire" has ravaged 54,632 hectares of land and is 35 per cent contained, according to Cal Fire.

Beyond the loss of homes, Los Angeles County Sheriff Jim McDonnell said the fire had destroyed "deep infrastructure" - power lines, water lines, sewers, roads, and lights - "and other things that make a city a city".

Here's what the affected area of Northern California looks like. Residents are also living closer to forests - as California's population has almost doubled to 40 million since the 1970s - placing more people and structures within at-risk burn areas. More than 300,000 people have been displaced across the state.

Sarah Gronseth kissed her dog Branch in the bed of a truck in a parking lot, Tuesday, in Chico Calif. Gronseth, a teacher, evacuated some of her high school students in her truck as the fire bore down on the high school in Paradise, Calif. "They save thousands and thousands of people", DeGeneres said Tuesday on her show, reported the site.

The bodies of some victims were found in and around the burned-out wreckage of vehicles engulfed in the firestorm as evacuation traffic halted in deadly knots of gridlock hours after the fire erupted. "Because I know the toll it takes on loved ones", Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said Monday night (local time) as he announced the discovery of 13 more dead.

Some evacuees in Malibu, a seaside community whose residents include a number of Hollywood celebrities, were allowed to return home but were left without power or cellphone service.

"It happened so fast".

While the causes of the Camp and Woolsey fires have not been determined, state regulators are investigating two utility companies that reported incidents shortly before the two fires started. Investigators are consulting forensic anthropologists for help in identifying the remains. "This declaration will help ensure that Americans who are threatened by these risky wildfires and who rely on Medicare, Medicaid, and the Children's Health Insurance Program have continuous access to the care they need", Azar said in a statement.

U.S. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke and California Governor Jerry Brown were scheduled on Wednesday to pay a visit to both of the sites, which President Donald Trump declared a disaster areas, making federal emergency assistance more readily available.
