Deadly salmonella outbreak forces USDA to recall raw turkey

"The U.S. Department of Agriculture knows more about the turkey products implicated in this outbreak than it is disclosing to the media or the American people", wrote Sarah Sorscher, CSPI's deputy director of regulatory affairs.

The USDA and FSIS announced the recall Thursday for more than 91,000 lbs. of Jennie-O ground turkey, in four varieties.

At least 164 cases of salmonella have turned up in 35 states, but not all are linked to the recalled products, the agency said.

It's unclear where the turkey at the center of this outbreak came from, as there doesn't appear to be one centralized distributor, and the USDA is (somewhat controversially) not naming particular brands.

The agency noted that its Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) unit was "continuing to investigate illnesses associated with this widespread outbreak, and additional product from other companies may also be recalled".

1-lb. packages of "Jennie-O TACO SEASONED GROUND TURKEY" with a "Use by" date of 10/02/2018. The recall also was limited to items with "Use By" dates of October 2 (and additionally October 1 for the 93% Lean product).

"Jennie-O Italian Seasoned Ground Turkey" with a "Use by" date of 10/02/2018. Patients have reported eating different types and brands of turkey products purchased from different stores, handling raw turkey pet food or raw turkey, or working with live turkeys or living with someone who handled live turkeys.

The CDC says signs of illness from salmonella can include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps.

Vulnerable populations include those under 5 and over 65 years of age and people with weakened immune systems, however, "most people recover without treatment".

One concern is that consumers may have contaminated products in their freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. Symptoms could take 12 to 72 hours to develop after exposure and illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days.

Regulators did not say how many people were exposed to Jennie-O products. Tests showed that it's also been in live turkeys and pet food.

Wash your hands after touching it.
