Theresa May’s Brussels trip fails to yield Brexit breakthrough

Spain threatens Brexit deal over Gibraltar status

Prime Minister Theresa May on Thursday hailed a draft Brexit agreement for future ties between London and Brussels as "the right deal" for Britain and said she was "determined to deliver it".

Spain has long claimed sovereignty over Gibraltar, which has been a British territory since 1713.

Neither side has much wiggle room left to polish the withdrawal treaty nor the political declaration on future relations that goes alongside it, but May must show that she has left nothing on the table if she is to convince British MPs to ratify the deal.

The deal on future relations comes after Britain and the European Union agreed on a divorce deal that settles the terms of Britain's exit.

In an update of the withdrawal agreement, both sides have agreed that the post-Brexit transition period may be extended from its current end date of December 31, 2020 "for up to one or two years".

Last week the European Union published a seven-page version of the draft on the future relationship, this political declaration is a filled out version of that draft, a wholesome 26 pages.

Sunday, November 25, will be held the European Union summit, which will discuss the British draft agreement on Brexit.

Theresa May said: "The British people want this to be settled".

The EU and Britain on Thursday agreed a draft declaration laying out plans for "ambitious, broad, deep and flexible" relations after Brexit, setting the stage for the divorce to be finalised at a weekend summit.

Spain is demanding a guarantee that Gibraltar would only be covered by a future trade deal if Madrid gives its consent.

Kurz told the Austria Press Agency that his trip to London is created to help May build support for the deal and that he hopes to get a "realistic picture" about May's chances of getting Parliament's backing.

Diplomats in Brussels said they thought Sanchez was trying to score points with voters before a high-stakes regional election in Andalusia on Dec 2.

As things stand, British banks would only be granted access to the European market if the UK's rules and regulations remain closely aligned, another example of the EU preventing Britain from forging its own destiny after Brexit.

"I think that everybody should vote for the deal because it is in the national interest", Hancock said of the prime minister's deal.

"The PM has been clear that we will not exclude Gibraltar and the other overseas territories and crown dependencies from our negotiations on the future relationship". On Tuesday, Merkel and her deputy chancellor, Olaf Scholz, both made it clear there's no wiggle room on the Brexit draft that's on the table.

She warned that if Parliament rejected her deal it could mean "more uncertainty, more division, or it could risk no Brexit at all".

In a surprise move after talks with Mr Juncker in Brussels on Wednesday night, Mrs May insisted she would press on to attempt to secure an agreement.
