Most New European HIV Cases Last Year Arose In Ukraine, Russia

Epidemic: HIV Rates Keep Rising in Eastern Europe

The amount of contemporary HIV diagnoses in the area resumed escalating in 2017, but the momentum of the stride of the growth is decelerating according to the report from the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control and the WHO Regional Office for Europe. Last week, a UNAID report found that 9.4 million people living with HIV worldwide do not now know they are living with the virus.

"The main objectives of this campaign are to raise the awareness of the population of the city of Lisbon regarding the prevention and transmission of HIV and increase the visibility of the issue of HIV and AIDS", said the note sent to Lusa, adding that the initiative also intends to " reduce the stigma and discrimination associated with living with HIV infection.

New HIV diagnoses are falling in Britain, from 5,280 new cases in 2016 to 4,363 in 2017.

"We live in a context necessarily different from the imaginary of many people, since the treatments are very effective today".

The minister said that the government is committed to make honest efforts for increasing the access to and uptake of HIV preventive and treatment services by engaging with all stakeholders to promote HIV awareness and minimize stigma and discrimination against HIV.

Dr. Masoud Dara, coordinator of communicable diseases and HIV team lead at WHO Europe said that we are quite behind in obtaining those targets especially in Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

The WHO's European Region is made up of 53 countries with a combined population of almost 900 million. For this reason, all the people should with a possible risk of infection regularly get tested for HIV, even if you feel healthy. Every second person diagnosed with HIV has already reached an advanced stage in the infection.

A total of 1,073 people in the region are now living with the condition.

Almost 160,000 people were newly infected in Europe previous year, and more than 130,000 of those diagnoses were among people in the East - the most ever recorded there, CNN reported.

HIV prevention methods in the United Kingdom include: condom provision, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), expanded HIV testing and prompt initiation of antiretroviral therapy after diagnosis. "To support people living with HIV and protect those at higher risk of infection, we need to fast track action by tailoring interventions". There was also a reduction in diagnoses attributed to heterosexual transmissions involving people from countries with generalised HIV epidemics. Participants expressed governments' firm commitment to scale up efforts to implement the Action Plan for the Health Sector Response to HIV in the WHO European Region and achieve the 90-90-90 targets.
