Putin meets Merkel other world leaders at G20 summit

In this November 29, 2018 photo German chancellor Angela Merkel leaves the government Airbus which was grounded after a technical failure at the airport in Cologne, western Germany, delaying Merkel's arrival at the G20 summit in Buenos Aires.

The emergency landing was caused by a technical malfunction. News portal Spiegel Online reported the plane suffered a complete failure of its communication system that left the crew without contact with ground control.

Merkel had notably been scheduled to hold talks with U.S. President Donald Trump, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Argentinian President Mauricio Macri.

Early Friday, after just three hour's sleep, she was taken by a German air force plane to Madrid.

Merkel had to spend the night in a hotel in nearby Bonn, the former West German capital, because no replacement plane with crew was immediately available.

The German Luftwaffe, or air force, is suffering a crisis of aircraft maintainance which spreads from the government duty jets they maintain for Dr Merkel and other senior members of the government including the German president, to combat aircraft.

The air force was sending a similar plane from Cologne-Bonn, where the government's fleet is based, to Buenos Aires on Friday to pick up Merkel after the G-20 summit.

Delegation sources said efforts were underway to organise new flights for Merkel and Finance Minister Olaf Scholz, possibly on a commercial carrier.

And in 2015, technical problems with the Konrad Adenauer forced Merkel and five ministers to make a flight to India on a A310 military troop transporter. Merkel is expected to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss Syria and Ukraine, including the recent incident in the Kerch Strait.
