Wins over Russian Federation and Kenya yesterday had set up a quarter-final against Canada, who went on to lose the final to New Zealand, but the North Americans secured a 24-7 victory with Louise Galvin getting the only try for Ireland. The 39-point thriller against the U.S. also went as deep into added time.

The Black Ferns Sevens will face Russian Federation in the first quarter-final of the Dubai Rugby Sevens at 6pm (NZT) after winning all their pool play matches on day one of the tournament.

The Kiwis easily beat the Eagles on Friday in pool play, but the final was in the balance until two minutes to go, when Andrew Knewstubb's second conversion to Dylan Collier's brazen try gave the Kiwis a safe 14-5 lead.

The results means that Shujaa got one point to finish last in the event alongside their continental rivals Zimbabwe, who lost to former World champions Wales 14-10 in the other semi-final for 13th place.

Australia picked up where they left off on day one in their quarter-final with Argentina, dominating from the outset as they continued their bid for a first Cup success in Dubai.

The next stage of the series takes place in Cape Town from 8-9 December.
