George HW Bush: Former president's service dog honours his master

His body will lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda for a public viewing from Monday until Wednesday morning.

"A attractive day In Texas - 'ceiling and visibility unlimited, ' Mr. President", he wrote - using a phrase that Bush held dear from his time in the Navy, and one used by his family and friends to discreetly spread the news of his death.

Bush will be buried next to his wife and former first lady Barbara Bush, who died in April, and his daughter Pauline Robinson "Robin" Bush, who died in 1953 at just 3 years old. The father of former President George W. Bush, he was a Naval aviator in World War II, a congressman, ambassador to the United Nations, envoy to China, CIA director and vice president for two terms under Ronald Reagan.

The 41st president died on Friday at his home in Houston.

On Dec. 5 at 10 a.m., a departure ceremony will begin, after which Bush's remains will be transported to the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in Washington, also known as the Washington National Cathedral, where a funeral service will be held for invited guests at 11 a.m.

Bush spokesman Jim McGrath posted a picture Sunday of the yellow Labrador retriever named Sully with the caption, "Mission complete".

Bush's son Jeb, Governor of Florida, retweeted the photo, with the simple words: "Sully has the watch".

A funeral mass will be held at the church at 10 a.m. local time on December 6 for invited guests. After the hour-long service, a motorcade will transport Bush's casket to a train station north of Houston, near the global airport named after Bush. The train will take about 2½ hours to travel roughly 113km to the city of College Station, home to Bush's presidential library at Texas A&M University.

While Bush's body was in Houston, the golden lab dutifully laid next to the casket, keeping watch over his former owner. He died Friday in Houston at age 94.

Shortly before leaving the service, he married his 19-year-old sweetheart, Barbara Pierce, and forged a 73-year union that was the longest presidential marriage in United States history until her death.

In a second message, she said she hoped readers and ticket holders would understand the decision "and join me in paying tribute" to Bush and "his tremendous contributions to our world".
