National Hockey League unanimously votes to expand to Seattle, mayor says

Ice hockey fans celebrate the announcement of Seattle being awarded an NHL expansion franchise in a bar in the city

A ground-breaking ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday in downtown Seattle.

What they had in mind was NHL hockey, the dream of a return of the world's premier league featuring men on skates.

"Today is an exciting and historic day for our league as we expand to one of North America's most innovative, attractive and fastest-growing cities", NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said.

That fact, coupled with the possibility of a work stoppage in 2020, may make it easy for the National Hockey League to simply push Seattle's entrance to 2021.

The Expansion Draft for the new team will be held in June 2021 and will not include the Vegas Golden Knights (in other words, they will not be forced to lose a player in the draft), the draft will be held with the same rules as the league used for the Vegas draft in 2017 so... The Vegas Golden Knights recently received approval to install wagering kiosks inside T-Mobile Arena, which is half owned by MGM Resorts.

The NHL Board of Governors has voted unanimously to approve expansion to Seattle. Some wealthy men with an eye on renovating an old arena batted their eyelashes at the NHL, and the indications right from the beginning were that the league was receptive. The Central Division has seven teams and the Pacific Division has eight.

The NHL is coming to Seattle.

The ownership group, led by majority stakeholder David Bonderman, Hollywood producer Jerry Bruckheimer and CEO Tod Leiweke, will pay a $650-million USA expansion fee. The board is also expected to be briefed on collective bargaining talks and the tentative settlement of a concussion lawsuit involving retired players. It is hard to pull that off when you are rolling around in a fresh $1.15-billion in expansion fees. Vegas does not get a cut of the money and is exempt from the expansion draft. Ever since the league began its aggressive southern expansion in the 1990s, there has perpetually been a handful of problem franchises.

"It will be a little bit different for us because we have the extra year now to go through it". Today's problem teams - Arizona, Florida, the Brooklyn Islanders - have been problems for years now.

The Seattle franchise has yet to be named.

The NHL awarded Seattle with a franchise on Tuesday and while the team isn't going to begin play until the 2021-22 season, management is already confident it can ice a competitive team from the start.

Naturally, this is where Quebec City comes back into the picture.

One of the next big decisions will be the team name. It could also be Kansas City, which built an arena in 2007 and is still without a major-league tenant.
