Ukraine sends troops to Russian border amid fears of an 'invasion'

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko responded to the standoff by introducing martial law for 30 days, something Ukraine hadn't done even after Crimea's annexation and amid large-scale fighting with Russia-backed separatists in the east in 2014-2015.

Russian Federation opened fire on and seized three Ukrainian navy ships and their crews on November 25 in an incident which Moscow and Kiev have blamed on each other, triggering a crisis that has raised fears of a wider conflict.

Poroshenko emphasized that "martial law does not mean the declaration of war", but a step toward strengthening Ukraine's defense.

Its approach to Russian Federation is, he says, one based on "strength and openness for political dialogue" and also "on whether Russian Federation will change in near future or not change".

Poroshenko said this tactic was used after Russian Federation seized Crimea and began to support separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine, sparking a conflict that has left more than 10,000 people dead.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies have helped modernise Ukraine's armed forces and boosted their presence in the Black Sea over the a year ago, with more ships deployed in the region and more air policing.

Martial law was declared in regions bordering Russian Federation and Transdniestria (Vinnytsia, Luhansk, Mykolayiv, Sumy, Odesa, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Kherson, Donetsk, and Zaporizhia) and the internal waters of the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait.

Another contender for the CDU leadership job, Health Minister Jens Spahn, said it was important to set new limits.

Russian Federation is adamant that the Ukrainian ships had entered its waters without permission.

The move has caused huge delays in recent months, leading to claims Russia is trying to blockade Ukraine's ports and transform the Azov into a de facto Russian lake.

The Kremlin dismissed the Ukrainian leader's statement as an "absurd" attempt to inflame tensions.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday said it was "too early" to return the Ukrainian naval vessels and 24 sailors that Moscow captured last week, The Guardian reported. Ukraine says the attack occurred in worldwide waters.

"What happened on November 25th is an extraordinary event that took place for the first time in 4.5 years of Russian aggression", Poroshenko said in a television interview".

"The accusations against Russian Federation have no basis whatsoever", he said.

He added, "We recently saw how Russian Federation used military force against Ukrainian vessels and arrested the ships and the sailors".

More than 9,500 Ukrainian armed forces personnel have been trained by British troops since the start of 2015.

Kiev says the sailors did nothing wrong, and its ships have the right to pass through the strait to reach Ukrainian ports in the Sea of Azov.
