George H.W. Bush’s Service Dog Stood Vigil By His Casket

A special member of the Bush family saluted President George H.W. Bush Tuesday, after stealing the show during the Monday's ceremonies honoring the president.

The political dynasty, led by son and former President George W. Bush, accompanied the patriarch's body on the flight aboard the presidential plane from Texas to Joint Base Andrews outside Washington, and then on a trip down Pennsylvania Avenue to the steps of the Capitol. The Washington Post has reported that the Bush family has intentionally planned a state funeral for him that will avoid criticism of Trump despite the long-running animosity between the two families, which would be in contrast to the September memorial for Sen.

The honorary pallbearers in Washington - for both Bush's entry into the Rotunda and the National Cathedral - will be Navy captains and admirals who have commanded the USS George H.W. Bush and members of the carrier strike group.

He also presided over the end of the Cold War between the United States and the former Soviet Union.

The late president's eulogists - son included - noted Bush's tendency to tangle his words and show his goofy side.

Presidents are traditionally asked to eulogize presidents who have died - and in past state events like this, that has been the case - but the Bush family is unlike any other and has another president in the family who will fill that role.

That Sully will continue to serve veterans was important to the Bush family.

House Speaker Paul Ryan alluded to that political setback in his Capitol remarks and said Bush handled defeat with grace. Bush himself seemed to be holding back tears.

President Donald Trump salutes as he and first lady Melania Trump pay their respects at the flag-draped casket of former President George H.W. Bush in the Rotunda of the Capitol in Washington, Monday, Dec. 3 2018. An invitation-only funeral service will follow at Washington National Cathedral before his casket returns to Houston for burial. Democrat Bill Clinton coasted to victory, ending Bush's presidency.

On Thursday, Bush will be interred at the George HW Bush Presidential Library Center in College Station, Texas, next to his wife Barbara, who died in April, and their daughter Robin who died of leukaemia at age three.

Trump also appeared to take a direct swipe at Bush by alluding to a phrase Bush coined during his acceptance speech in 1988 at the Republican National Convention.

A humble hero of World War II, Bush was just 20 when he survived being shot down during a bombing run over a Japanese island.

Mourners lined up to enter the Capitol beginning Monday evening for the public viewing.
