XFL style, starting in 2020

Football is back! St. Louis awarded XFL franchise

In its first incarnation, the XFL, which was conceived as an outdoor football league that would take place during the NFL off-season, survived just one season having sought to fuse the sport with the over-the-top theatrics of pro wrestling.

St. Louis is one of eight cities to be awarded a franchise in the returning XFL.

The St. Louis team will play in The Dome at America's Center, the former home of the Rams.

"Our goal was to establish a spirit of true partnership and build an organization and a year-round presence that makes these cities proud", said League Commissioner Oliver Luck.

The first attempt at the XFL flamed out after one season in 2001.

Losing their National Football League team made St. Louis a prime city to welcome an XFL club. Luck said a big focus will be on a faster-moving game, with fewer breaks in play, fewer timeouts and fewer TV timeouts.

The Dallas XFL team will call the new stadium, Globe Life Park, home in 2020. The XFL has locked in major former National Football League executives, and in the first quarter of 2019, they will identify team presidents and key players, including Doug Flutie.

Luck says they will look for the best coaches and players available and majority will have college and National Football League experience.

While teams have no staff, no coaches, players or even names, Luck noted that as of Wednesday fans could go online and put deposits down on season tickets.

Luck also said there was an active effort to guarantee lower ticket costs compared with other professional sporting events, but no concrete numbers were offered.

One day after the long-awaited announcement that Seattle will be getting an National Hockey League franchise, the city is also going to be the site of one of the eight franchises in the rebooted XFL. The AAF also has eight teams and a 10-week schedule but has targeted mid-size markets.
