HELL ON WHEELS BREAKING NEWS – AMC RENEWS FOR THIRD SEASON

It has been announced that AMC has renewed the acclaimed Hell on Wheels for a third season. The series – which has as its central framework the construction of the transcontinental railroad in the post-Civil War era – has featured a strong ensemble cast. The series has explored such themes as the impetus for American nation-state expansion, Indigenous territorial rights (specifically as Euro-settler governments “claim” areas), race relations and social class.

The lead character of Cullen Bohannon (played by Anson Mount) had set out at the very start of the series to avenge the murder of his family during the Civil War by a Union gang. Bohannon had initially embedded himself in the construction process as a way to track the gang. Yet as Season Two ended, he had become connected to the finishing of the westward Union Pacific railroad in a way he had not anticipated.

There are some questions that remain from the season finale of Season Two in terms of returning characters. The demise of certain characters, however, is not in doubt – some were eliminated during the arc of Season Two and others killed in the season finale.

AMC has renewed the show for a 10-episode run in Season Three and has confirmed that it will again be filmed in Alberta. Hell on Wheels averaged 2.4 million viewers per episode during its second season.

The following song was played during the powerful ending of Season Two – the track, “Devil’s Waitin’ ”, is by the group Black Rebel Motorcycle Club:
