AMC’s acclaimed Western series Hell on Wheels will feature Saulteaux actor Adam Beach in its August 24th episode. The Manitoba-born Beach will play the character of Red Bear, a chief of the Kiowa people. Lead characters Cullen Bohannon (Anson Mount) and Elam Ferguson (Common) will encounter Red Bear and his tribe while seeking to secure a local lumber source for the ongoing construction of the westward Union Pacific railway.
With a film career that began in 1990, Adam Beach has an accomplished résumé of roles in movies that range from Smoke Signals (1998) to Windtalkers (2002) to Cowboys and Aliens (2011). On television, Beach played a detective of Mohawk ancestry on the hit NBC series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit from 2007-2008 and he currently stars in the CBC series Arctic Air.
In terms of documentaries, Beach contributed his thoughts to the well-received film Reel Injun (2009). Directed by Cree filmmaker Neil Diamond, the film provides an Indigenous perspective on the portrayals of Indigenous peoples in cinema and critically evaluates the historical approach of Westerns within those depictions. The third season of Hell on Wheels airs Saturdays on AMC at 9E/8C.
