LONGMIRE SET FOR SEASON 3 RENEWAL

The critically-acclaimed contemporary Western series Longmire looks set for a Season 3 renewal by host network A&E. Following a Season 2 finale that saw 4.42 million viewers tune in, executive producer John Coveny revealed on his Twitter account that “The call just came: Season 3 for #Longmire is a GO!

Set in present-day Wyoming, Longmire takes place in fictional Absaroka County. The lead character is Walt Longmire (Robert Taylor), a widowed local sheriff. In addition to Taylor, the strong ensemble cast includes Lou Diamond Phillips, Katee Sackhoff, Bailey Chase, Cassidy Freeman and Adam Bartley. Zahn McClarnon has a recurring role as Mathias, chief of the tribal police for the local Cheyenne reservation.

The series, which averaged 3.71 million viewers per episode in Season Two, is based upon the mystery novel series of the same name by Craig Johnson. Johnson himself is a former law enforcement officer.

One of the major narrative threads that originated in Season 1 and carried into Season 2 was the electoral contest for sheriff between Walt Longmire and his own deputy, Branch Connally (Bailey Chase). That particular thread was resolved during Longmire’s sophomore season.

While Longmire is shot principally in New Mexico, the cast and crew have maintained a connection to Wyoming with their attendance at “Longmire Days” in Buffalo, WY. The fictional town of Durant, WY in the series is based on Buffalo, which is near the home of author Johnson.

The series finale of Longmire honored the 19 members of the Prescott (Arizona) Fire Department’s Granite Mountain Hotshots who died in June 2013 fighting an Arizona wildfire. That Hotshots team had earlier in 2013 worked to prevent a fire from destroying the area where filming of Walt Longmire’s home takes place. The firefighters were honored in the closing credits of Season 2.

    • Hi Briana….thanks for taking the time to visit. Longmire, in my view, has done a number of things right in presenting a contemporary Western, among which include how it incorporates current issues and aspects of Indigenous voices. All the best.
