Launched in 2011, the Western TV series is set in the immediate post-US Civil War years and dramatizes the construction of the transcontinental Union Pacific (UP) railroad westward. Beginning in Iowa, the UP would eventually meet the eastward-building Central Pacific in Utah in May of 1869. The Union Pacific track reached what is now Cheyenne, Wyoming on November 13, 1867.

This writer traveled to Cheyenne in the Summer of 2013 and took this picture of the historic Cheyenne Depot, which has now been converted into a railroad museum. Union Pacific competed the depot in 1887.

The title for Hell on Wheels is based on the mobile town that historically followed the Union Pacific railway west. The historical “Hell on Wheels”, effectively a tent town, sought to glean the wages from workers via the diversions of drinking, dance hall girls, and gambling.

Hell on Wheels is set to debut its fourth season on Saturday, August 2nd. The first ten episodes of Season 4 will run consecutively for 10 weeks before taking a break – the final three episodes will run starting November 8th. Further information about the show can be found via AMC at Hell on Wheels.
