HELL ON WHEELS MARATHON ON AMC PRIOR TO SEASON 4 LAUNCH

AMC has invited viewers to climb aboard a long distance train of TV viewing, so to speak. Beginning today, Friday, August 1st at 3pm (EST), AMC will run the first three seasons of its acclaimed Western series Hell on Wheels as a lead-up to the Season 4 premiere of the show Saturday, August 2nd at 9E/8C. With each preceding season containing ten 1-hour episodes, that is a total of 30 straight hours of Hell on Wheels to give either an opportunity to catch up or refresh oneself with the series.

Launched in 2011 and filmed in Alberta, Hell on Wheels dramatizes the westward construction of the Union Pacific transcontinental railroad across the United States in the immediate post-Civil War years. Anson Mount leads a strong ensemble cast and plays the character of Cullen Bohannon, a former Confederate soldier originally drawn to the railway seeking revenge against a rogue Union army gang that had murdered his family during the war.

Over the course of three seasons, Bohannon has become further embedded in the railway project while dealing with a variety of personal challenges. The series also provides a larger framework for an examination of such themes as Manifest Destiny, race and class relations, and Indigenous rights. At the end of Season Three, Bohannon became intertwined with a growing Mormon community which at first resisted the arrival of the Union Pacific. Season 4 finds the railway in the emerging metropolis of Cheyenne, Wyoming, in 1868.

Throughout the show’s first three seasons, AMC has provided supplementary video clips to promote and further explore the series, both in terms of its ideas and behind-the-scenes creation. This post includes some of the most recent (note: if a given video does not work in your country, visit the AMC video AMC Video site directly).
