Gunslingers combines re-enactment with commentary from experts along with voice-over narration from actors portraying the historical figures. The goal of the series is to examine the figures more completely and in context so as to see behind the newspaper and folk legends. For those interested in Old West re-enactment and historical guns, the American Heroes Channel website also profiles a number of the weapons used by the various Western legends.

Among the guest commentators is Ron Hansen, author of The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, the 1983 novel which inspired the 2007 film starring Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck. In the Wyatt Earp episode, Kurt Russell, who played Earp in the film Tombstone (1993), provides his own observations.

The executive producer for the series is Christopher Cassel, who has won Emmy awards for his previous work. Further information about the series – including clips from each of the six episodes – can be found at Gunslingers.
