THE PINKERTONS – NEW WESTERN SERIES WITH AMERICA’S FIRST FEMALE DETECTIVE

A new Western TV series is currently making its way thru its first season. The Pinkertons, launched in October of 2014, is based upon the real Pinkerton National Detective Agency established by Allan Pinkerton in 1850.

The series stars Jacob Blair as William Pinkerton, Martha MacIssac as Kate Warne, and Angus Macfadyen as Allan Pinkerton. Allan Pinkerton (1819-1884) was a Scottish emigrant to the US who, in addition to creating his detective agency, also provided security for US President Abraham Lincoln during the US Civil War (1861-65). William Pinkerton (1846-1923), son of Allan, became head of the agency upon his father’s death. Kate Warne (1833-1868) is acknowledged as the first female detective in the United States, beginning her work for the Pinkertons in 1856 – she was not yet 24.

Filmed in Manitoba, Canada, in locations such as Winnipeg, The Pinkertons is slated for a 22-episode first season and is set in the American West of the 1860s, following the Civil War. The show is in fact officially licensed by the still-existing Pinkerton agency, which now offers security guard and detective services. Episodes in the series are drawn from actual Pinkerton case files dating back to that period. The original agency is known for having given the world the term “private eye”, drawn from a logo proclaiming that the Pinkertons “never sleep”.

In terms of Western outlaws, while their successes included capturing members of the Reno Gang in the late 1860s, and contributing to the 1906 arrest of ‘The Grey Fox’, train bandit Bill Miner, the Pinkertons were never successful in their pursuit of either Jesse James or Butch Cassidy and his partner, The Sundance Kid.

The Pinkertons has run on US channels since its October launch and began airing in Canada on the CHCH network in late JanuaryThe 14th episode debuts this weekend. NOTE: For a review of Episode 1, visit Pinkertons E1. Here is a trailer for the first episode:
