HELL ON WHEELS SEASON 5 PREMIERE DATE

AMC has now announced the premiere date for Season 5 of its acclaimed Western series, Hell on Wheels. Debuting in 2011, the show dramatizes the creation of North America’s first transcontinental railroad in the post-US Civil War years. A strong ensemble cast is led by Anson Mount, who plays former Confederate soldier Cullen Bohannon, a man first drawn to the railway project on a revenge mission. Season 5 of Hell on Wheels premieres Saturday, July 18th at 9(ET)/8(CT).

The upcoming season will be the final one for the series but it will delivered over a period of two years. With a total of 14 episodes (an increase from a previous 13), seven installments will air in 2015 with the second set rolled out in 2016.

During its run, Hell on Wheels has explored a number of themes that still connect to the modern-day. Those ideas include the notion of American exceptionalism, Indigenous territory rights, race relations, social class, and the growth of technology. In Season 5, the character of Bohannon moves from working for the westward-building Union Pacific railroad to its competitor, the eastward-aiming Central Pacific. In doing so, the series will now highlight the contribution of the thousands of Chinese workers who worked for that railroad in the 1860s. Filming of the upcoming season is currently taking place in Alberta.
