Filmed in Alberta, Canada, Hell on Wheels debuted in 2011 and dramatizes the building of North America’s first transcontinental railroad in the post-US Civil War years. The series has thus far explored a number of themes with contemporary resonance; ideas of American exceptionalism, Indigenous rights, race relations, the after-effects of war and the Civil War specifically, social class, and technological growth and its effects upon the environment.

A varied and skilled ensemble cast is led by Anson Mount, who plays former Confederate soldier Cullen Bohannon (figure in the above poster), a man first drawn to the railroad on a revenge mission. In Season 5, the character of Bohannon moves from working for the westward-building Union Pacific railroad to its competitor, the eastward-directed Central Pacific. This story-line shift now allows the series to highlight the contribution of the thousands of Chinese workers who worked for that railroad in the 1860s. Each railroad received government subsidies for every mile of track laid thus creating a “race” between the two. The Union Pacific and Central Pacific would meet on May 10th, 1969, at Promontory, Utah.

The upcoming season will be the final one for the series but it will screen over a period of two years. With a total of 14 episodes (an increase from a previous 13), seven installments will air in 2015 with the second set debuting in 2016.
