With the July 18th launch of Season 5 of Hell on Wheels now just nine days away, AMC is ramping up its promotion for the well-received Western series, which dramatizes the building of the US transcontinental railroad in the post-Civil War period. The network has now released a preview video for its upcoming – and final – season.
The following clip features discussion of the major shift in story-line that has occurred with the move of lead character Cullen Bohannon (Anson Mount) from the westward-building Union Pacific to the eastward Central Pacific. Those two railroads – competing for land grants and federal subsidies – raced each other toward a meeting point that eventually took place in Utah on May 10th, 1869.
This shift now brings a focus to the thousands of Chinese workers who helped build the Central Pacific, and creates the opportunity to introduce a number of new characters. Among them is Chang (Byron Mann), a key individual who controls the Chinese workers toiling for the railroad.
The upcoming fifth season, filmed in Alberta, will in fact be delivered over a period of two years. The first seven episodes of Season 5 air in 2015 with a second set of seven shows rolling out in 2016. Season 5 of Hell on Wheels premieres Saturday, July 18th at 9 (ET)/8(CT).
