The new Western crime TV series The Pinkertons is set to premiere in the United Kingdom and Ireland. First launched October 2014 in the United States, with episodes based upon actual case files of the Pinkerton National Detective Agency, the show will debut on UKTV’s Drama channel this Sunday, August 30th at 8pm (local time).
The Pinkerton agency was created by Alan Pinkerton (1819-1884), a Scottish emigrant to the US, and was first based in Chicago. The agency gave the world the term “private eye”, drawn from a logo with a single eye declaring that the Pinkertons “never sleep”.
The Pinkertons are also known for employing Kate Warne (1833-1868), acknowledged as the first female detective in the United States – she started her work for the agency at the young age of 23. Among her accomplishments was a key role in discovering and preventing a pre-inauguration plot to assassinate Abraham Lincoln in 1861.
Allan’s son, William (1846-1923), would take charge of the agency upon his father’s death. Some of the famous outlaws the Pinkertons pursued include Jesse James and the duo of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Despite numerous other successes, the agency would never apprehend any of the three men.
In the series The Pinkertons, Scottish actor Angus Macfadyen stars as Allan Pinkerton, Jacob Blair is William Pinkerton, and Martha MacIssac plays Kate Warne.

The first season of the series was filmed in Manitoba, Canada, and runs 22 episodes. The setting of Season 1 is the American West of the mid-1860s, immediately following the US Civil War. The show is in fact officially licensed by the still-existing Pinkerton agency, which continues to offer detective and security guard services.
