All courses are available to students in Canada, the US, and those based internationally – the classes are potentially transferrable to your own college program (transfers vary between institutions). Within the film-based courses, students complete film reviews and share reflections about the Western genre via assignments. Those two classes will explore such themes as Origins of the Western, Landscape & Setting, Soundtracks, Directors & Actors, portrayals of Indigenous Peoples and of Women, TV Westerns, and a sample of Western Video Games.

Launched in 2015, The Video Game West online course is dedicated to an interactive exploration of the Western genre via the medium of video games. Popular genre games such as Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption (2010) and Ubisoft’s Call of Juarez: Gunslinger (2013) are examined. As a sample of such discussion, here is the video for the 2010 Spike Award-winning song from Red Dead Redemption, “Far Away”, composed and performed by Jose Gonzalez:

The Continuing Education department at St. Clair College (Windsor,ON/Detroit,MI) will offer Westerns: Film as a Lens to the Present as a 12-week online General Education class beginning Monday, May 9th. Students can register up to May 20th for the course – see the Westerns – Con Ed link for further information.

To register via the Continuing Education department of Sault College (Sault Ste. Marie, ON/MI) for Westerns: A Study in the Film Genre and/or The Video Game West, contact that department via Soo Westerns – the college will provide a course outline for your institution to authorize as part of your specific program. The two Sault College courses run 14 weeks, beginning Tuesday, May 10th, with the last date to register May 17th. If individuals need further help, please feel free to email me directly via cbeharriell@saultcollege.ca .

If you are looking for a different kind of college course and credit, one that matches an interest in the Western genre, films, TV series, and/or video games, I hope to see you in the digital classroom!
